A furniture cluster commences its operations in Industrial Park “Perspective”.

Cluster policy is a relatively new trend of the Russian economy; however, in other countries it has already proven to be as a powerful and effective tool for development of the industrial potential.

What is cluster? The English term ‘cluster’ means a bunch or conglomeration. In Economics a cluster is understood as a group of interrelated companies; at that, the interactions bring the entire group to a completely new level.

For example, if a sheet of laminated chipboard, a piece of timber, some fittings and fabric next to each other, you will only get a set of materials. However, if you assemble them in a specific order, using required instruments, you will make a chair. Cluster concept utilizes the same idea: accumulate purchasing agents, manufacturers, designers, wholesalers – everyone in one or another way connected to furniture production – in the same place.

What advantages do cluster members gain?

Clusters are supported by the state – by means of subsidies, tax privileges, and other preferences based on laws passed on cluster policy. Previously, state support had been offered to a single enterprise or a sector of economy; however, this practice demonstrated little efficiency of such support. When an enterprise was granted constant subsidies, it lost its motivation to create new, more competitive products, because the state was offering money in any case. Why make improvements? Supporting a cluster as a whole, where dozens of competitors could be involved, makes manufacturers introduce innovations to their products, reduce costs, and implement new technologies.

Another advantage of a cluster is its geographic localization. Closeness of companies participating in the manufacturing chain minimizes transportation costs, which influences the cost of production and, as a result, the consumer price. The lower the price – the higher the product’s competitiveness.

However, the main advantage of a cluster is that it strengthens the innovative component of the business. In the course of intersectoral communication a more intensive information exchange takes place, new horizontal interlinks between process participants are created, and new ideas for technology improvement are born.

In order to continue development of the furniture cluster, it has been proposed to create a manufacturing and storage base at Industrial Park “Perspective”, designated for small and medium businesses of the furniture sector. It includes forty standard modules with the area of 288 sq. m. with connected electric power lines, heating, sewerage, and water supply. The ceiling height is 4.8 m, which permits placing practically any equipment there. Each module has utility rooms, a separate entrance, and a parking lot of 300 sq. m. Commissioning of the first priority facilities of the manufacturing and storage complex is scheduled for September 2013.

The final link of the manufacturing chain will be the trading and exhibition center with the area of 14,000 sq. m., so that enterprises of the entire cycle will be concentrated at the small territory – starting from purchase of components, cutting of chip boards (laminated chip boards), and wood processing, and ending with manufacture of the finished goods, which will be sold at the trading and exhibition center. The project also includes office and hotel facilities with the area up to 3000 sq. m. and the parking area of 4,000 sq. m.

On November 29, 2012, a presentation of objects of the Voronezh furniture cluster is scheduled at Benefit Plaza Congress Hotel: furniture production capacities of Cedar Group of Companies, KDM Wholesale and Retail Network, and the trading and exhibition center. Three discounts for the amount of 300,000 rubles for purchase of production modules will be drawn at the event.
